In 1988, the NSW Stock and Station Agents Association INC held its first Young Auctioneers Competition where the winner received the John Weekes Memorial trophy. In 2000, the official Sydney Royal Young Auctioneer Competition was launched at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Today, the Sydney Royal Easter Show hosts the NSW State and Australian National Finals of the Competition.
Tthe Competition attracts finalists from NSW, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia and most recently, Western Australia. Budding NSW Auctioneers face a rigorous selection process to become a NSW State Finalist. All nominees must complete a two-day Australian Livestock & Property Agents (ALPA) Auctioneers School program to polish their skills.
On the second day they are assessed and selected by the ALPA NSW Professional Development and Education Committee. The other States also follow similar selection criteria.
The winner and runner-up of each State Competition have automatic entry into the National Competition. The winner of the National Young Auctioneers Competition has their name engraved on the Prosser Cup and wins a tour of a lifetime to the Calgary Stampede in Canada. The Winner is also the Australian representative in the International Auctioneers Competition. This tour is run in conjunction with Rural Press and ALPA, and the logistics managed by Quadrant Australia. For more information on the Tour please contact Ms Olivia Trafford of ALPA on (02) 9262 6633.
